Businesses of all sizes and across multiple sectors engage with higher education institutions to undertake joint, or specialist research projects. The range of research projects undertaken in MTU is vast and can range from new product development, product testing, through to market analysis. Extended Campus can assist businesses, that require a specialist research team, by making the relevant connections for them within MTU. In addition, Extended Campus assists businesses in engaging the services of undergraduate or postgraduate students to carry out less specialist projects on their behalf.

The Centre for Advanced Manufacturing and Management Systems (CAMMS) conducts research and consultancy projects in the areas of plant layout, simulation, project management and process optimisation.

The Centre for Advanced Photonics & Process Analysis (CAPPA) is at the forefront of photonics research in Ireland.The centre works on a wide variety of projects such as photonic device development and novel inspection techniques for manufacturing processes.

CTC offers research and consultancy in environmental management and preventive approaches to environmental protection. CTC is active in developing and utilising a better understanding of socio-economic factors in the move toward sustainability.

The NIMBUS Centre is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment for embedded systems research, development and demonstration. Research focuses on hardware, systems integration and networking in application fields.

The Medical Engineering Design and Innovation Centre (MEDIC) brings together the full set of skills to develop medical device products. MEDIC helps inventors and companies secure funding for Research and Development projects.
