The Certificate in Supervisory Management is a professional upskilling solution to meet the needs of multiple industry sectors in the South West region, as identified by the work of the industry-led South West Regional Skills Forum.

The programme is designed for organisations wishing to provide continuous professional development for staff aspiring to, or already in, supervisory or managerial roles and is suitable for an extensive range of industry sectors from manufacturing to service organisations.

The Need

The South West Regional Skills Forum, coordinated by Dr Siobhán Bradley (SWRSF Manager), in consultation and collaboration with industries across the South-West, worked with both CIT and IT Tralee to customise this programme to address industry needs with the support of Cork Chamber Skillnet, BiopharmaChem Skillnets, South-Kerry Skillnets and South-West Gnó Skillnets.

The Solution

The Certificate in Supervisory Management is structured around four modules (20 ECT), incorporating Lean Sigma Practitioner, Management Practice, Performance Management, and People Management (incl. conflict and mediation). Delivered on a part-time basis, one day per week, over six months, the emphasis is on action learning, so that practical classroom exercises can be seamlessly transferred back to the workplace.

Developed with industry input from the outset, the programme draws on the strength and expertise of both institutes involved, including CIT’s Department of Organisation and Professional Development, CIT’s Centre for Advanced Manufacturing and Management Systems (CAMMs), and the Department of Business at IT Tralee.

Benefits of the Engagement

This peer-to-peer professional learning involving multiple companies in both programme development and participation, in partnership with both institutes, has been highlighted as a major strength by industry. The programme has attracted significant support from employers wishing to support their employees in progressing to supervisory/management roles and companies who have already participated in the programme include Carbery Plastic, EPS Group, Tricel, Dairymaster, Avonmore Electrical and Sanmina.

The Certificate in Supervisory Management also serves as a gateway for learners who wish to pursue further awards at Level 7, 8 & 9 and avail of Recognition of Prior Learning.

“The learning outcome of this programme has far exceeded the expectations of the attendees and we as a company have already seen the benefits in the individuals themselves with increased confidence, a more structured approach to planning, active listening and a collaborative to their management style approach.” - Joanne Tracey, HR Manager, EPS Group.
